You took a wrong turn on your way to the Spring Festival!

In order to escape you have to find keys, answer riddles, and survive your encounters using sticky bandages. There's also some cash lying around for the taking, and trash no one has cleaned up.

The pests don't like intruders, so you might just have to give them a good BONK!

PEST BONK is a 5-10min cutesy RE-like experience with a few riddles and a small level to explore with multiple endings.

Originally made for the Cozy Spring Jam 2025 but I missed the deadline 😅. So I took an extra week to finish things up!

Keyboard

(I tried to also make a layout for left-handed players in parenthesis)

WASD (IKJL)	Move and turn left and right. Tap Sprint key while walking backwards to Quick Turn.
E (U)	Use
Left Shift (Spacebar)	Sprint

Esc	Pause
Left Click	Attack and select UI elements.

Gamepad

The game only features partial controller support for in game actions, menus will need to still be navigated with a mouse so its recommended to play KBM and not with gamepad. If you are committed to controller these are the controls.

Left Stick	Move, pull back and then tap sprint to Quick Turn

Select / B	Inventory
Start	Pause
RT	Attack

It is recommend that with a third party software you bind the Right Stick and R1 to act as a Mouse and Left Click, you can use Steam's Controller Settings to do this if you add it as a Non-Steam game. You can also use something like reWASD.

Gameplay Help

Look for keys, answer riddles, and overcome obstacles to reach the final door. Pick up trash or cash if you want, and see how it affects your ending! Find a mallet so you can attack, and look for sticky bandages to heal your health. You can find your health in your inventory.

Steam Deck

If you would like to play on Steam Deck, you will need to install itch through the discover store or load the game onto your device with a USB stick.

1. Download Itch via the discover store in desktop mode, sign in, and then download Pest Bonk and the Steam Art Assets zip.
   1. Or download Pest Bonk and the art assets on to a USB stick and then extract the game into your directory of choice.
   2. If you would like to put the game on your SD card using Itch, go to Prefences > Manage install locations > Add location 
      1. Click your SD card and then New Folder
      2. Assign it a name and hit Okay, then Okay again
      3. Your are now free to remove the original installation directory or choose from either based on your needs
2. Open Steam, then on the top bar click Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library > Browse
3. Navigate to where the PESTBONK.exe is located and choose the exe
4. Click the new PEST BONK game, click the cog and then Properties > Compatibility > Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool > Choose any recent Proton version (I used Hotfix)
5. The game is now playable in game mode, install any Microsoft dependencies when first launching the game

The above should also work for other games on Itch without Linux versions! (I find on the steam deck some Linux builds refuse to launch, so you need to install a windows version anyway.)

1. To add the art assets, it's easiest to do it in desktop mode, you will need to
   1. Right click the game capsule, Manage > Set custom artwork > 
      1. Navigate to where SG_Pestbonk is, you will need to set the file type in the browser to all files as it's a png
   2. Go into the game properties, Shortcut, click the empty square next to the game name (also rename it PEST BONK if it is using the exe name)
      1. Navigate to SI_PestBonk (set file types to all)
   3. Click the game to enter it's page, right click the empty header image and add the Custom Background and Custom Logo
      1. You're looking for SH_PestBonk and TitleSprite
   4. To get the Horizontal steam grid thumbnail, you need to launch the game at least once, then from recent games repeat steps from the Custom Artwork step in 1a
      1. Look for SGH_PestBonk
2. You should now have all the art assets added to your non-steam game shortcut

Not sure if anyone would actually want to add this to their steam deck but I can always reuse this section in the future.

Developer Note

This is my first game so please go easy on me! I'm an artist and I'm absolutely NOT a programmer, so don't let whatever amount of presentation from my experience with illustration and 3D modeling fool you into thinking this is a better game than it is 💀 

There are definitely still bugs in the game that I'm not smart enough to fix and features I really wanted to implement (like controller support for menus, why is UE5 so bad at it). Things I still want to include but are out of the scope of my one week dedicated to this project:

• Way more puzzles (and better ones too)
• A bigger level, and more of them to go through
• Dialogue with enemies
• More enemy types
• Smarter enemies (AI is hard)
• Full keyboard and controller support so you don't need to use a mouse
• Proper linux build and support for steamdeck
• More detail in the level
• A good UI that's not just 9,000 buttons in a grid
• Proper death screen so you don't have to manually hit pause and reset the level (right now I just couldn't be bothered for something I just wanted to get out fast)

I likely won't update this little would-be jam game unless it's popular for some reason, so please leave comments on what you think if you try the game! Let me know if you actually want more of something like this.
